Sold Georgian Walnut Marquetry Antique Coffer Coffor - Hereford

Description

This is a beautiful, original antique, Medieval Revival / Aesthetic Movement walnut and marquetry inlaid mule chest / coffer / blanket box with origins dating from the 18th Century. The chest stands on a cross-grain moulded bracket foot stile plinth in figured mahogany, with an ogee moulded edge. Rising over this are three beautiful marquetry inlaid drawers set in walnut cross-banding with very decorative fruitwood inlays of arabesque form with brass dropper handles and fabulous Rococo escutcheons. Rising above is a cross-grain walnut moulding to both the top of the drawer base and the base of the plinth with a deep ogee moulding in walnut having classic arabesque form butterfly and bird decorated inlaid panels set in walnut cross-banding and having a beautiful foliate border. There are matched panels to the sides of both the base and the top surmounging which is the cross-grain walnut moulded top with walnut panelling and matched marquetry inlays. The coffer top has a matched Rococo style escutcheon to the three drawers on the base. The coffer itself has an oak base with beautiful walnut mouldings and fruitwood inlays and pine baseboard, the drawers are oak lined. The drawers have hand-cut dovetail joints and solid oak drawer bottoms. A beautiful piece of furniture having the most wonderful character only achieved with age.

Date:
The coffer dates circa 1700 - 1800, the inlays, walnut veneers and mouldings probably dating from the mid to late 19th Century.

Condition:
The mule chest coffer is in good condition for its age. The finish has been restored recently as it had been covered in a very dark varnish, this having been removed and the coffer re-finished to reveal the rich colouring of the wood. The later fitted plinth is a copy of the original, this being one that our own craftsmen have fitted using Georgian mahogany. The coffer has later fitted hinges. There is a lock, although we have no key, the lock has not been tested and locks are fitted to each of the drawers, again we have no keys. There is evidence of earlier handles on the inside of the drawers, two on each of the drawers, although with the later veneering these are not evident on the front.
