Tang Dynasty "Prancing Horse" AD 618-906 - Lincolnshire

Description

This gorgeous example of a Tang Dynasty pottery horse.. The horse raises one leg in the air as he turns his head to the side.
This elegant sculpture is a testament to the admiration and adoration the Chinese had for these marvellous creatures. Although they were an integral part in the expansion and defence of the empire.

Possibly made for a rich person's tomb. Funerary figures played a central role in funeral processions and burials during the Tang dynasty (618-906). Figures were placed on a cart during the funeral procession, then lined up in front of the tomb and finally, after the deceased had been placed inside the burial chamber.
